When People in Bulgaria Order a Polygraph Test

Lie detector test in Bulgaria — SPU examiner conducting a polygraph session

Bulgaria has become a second home for tens of thousands of Ukrainians — both those who arrived because of the war and those who have long run a business or worked at the Black Sea resorts. Life between two countries, work in international teams, money sent across borders — all of this creates situations where you need to know the truth for certain rather than guess.

People come to us with two kinds of requests. The first is personal and family: when trust is hard to keep over distance, or when someone new appears whose sincerity is in doubt. The second is business: checking staff in companies with a high cash turnover, tracing a leak, assessing a future partner. Below are the situations we are asked about most often.

Family & personal

Suspicion of infidelity, hidden debts, mistrust after relocation or a long separation. An answer instead of endless arguments.

Infidelity test →
Personnel & screening

Pre-employment screening, investigations of theft and leaks, checks of staff with access to money.

Personnel screening →
Legal matters

Forensic psychophysiological testing, examinations for court use, refuting false accusations.

Forensic testing →
Business partners

Checking the reliability of a partner or borrower before a deal or an investment.

Borrower assessment →
Domestic staff

Vetting nannies, housekeepers and drivers. Peace of mind for your home and family in a foreign country.

Staff vetting →
Teenagers & family

Substance use, thefts, a dangerous social circle in a new environment — clarified delicately.

Teen testing →

The Ukrainian Community in Bulgaria: Trust at a Distance

Since 2022, tens of thousands of Ukrainian families have settled in Bulgaria — mostly along the coast, in Varna, Burgas and Sofia. Many families are divided: some stayed in Ukraine, some moved further into Europe, some work in rotation. Months apart put trust to the test, and phone calls rarely settle the doubts.

A lie detector test in such a situation is not a way to "catch" someone but a way to restore clarity. Often it is the result confirming faithfulness that becomes the turning point: the couple stops living in suspicion. We run such tests with the utmost care — only with voluntary written consent, without pressure, and with the right to decline any question. Where it helps, the examiner speaks with the client in their native language to ease the tension.

It is worth stressing that a polygraph in family matters is a tool of clarity, not punishment. We never pressure anyone into a test and never work behind a second person's back: the check is possible only by informed consent. Often the very willingness to take the test already removes half of the tension, while the result either restores trust or opens the way to an honest conversation without mutual accusations.

How a Polygraph Session Works
Modern polygraph equipment used for lie detector tests

During the test the instrument records several body indicators at once — breathing rhythm, pulse and blood pressure, plus micro-changes in the skin's electrical conductivity. When a person tries to hide the truth, these reactions arise on their own, beyond conscious control — that is exactly what the method is built on.

SPU examiners follow the internationally recognized CQT and CIT methodologies — the same ones used by law-enforcement agencies in the US and Europe. When the protocol is followed, the accuracy of the conclusion reaches 95–98%.

1
Pre-test interview — 30–40 min

Clarifying the situation and agreeing on question wording. The examinee sees every question in advance — no surprises.

2
Sensor setup

Safe and painless. Sensors record physiological parameters throughout the test.

3
Testing — 40–60 min

A series of yes/no questions with several repetitions for reliability.

4
Results

A verbal preliminary conclusion right after the test. The official written report follows in 3–5 business days.

What a Polygraph Measures and Why It Is Trusted

A polygraph does not "read minds" — it simply compares how the body reacts to different groups of questions. Readings are taken on four channels at once: breathing, heart activity, skin response and small movements. It is the involuntary nature of these reactions that makes them informative: the body responds faster than a person can think an answer through.

The examiner looks not at a single spike but at a stable pattern — how consistently and strongly the body reacts to relevant questions compared with neutral ones. The conclusion is built on several repetitions and the combination of channels, so ordinary nervousness does not distort the result, while deliberate attempts at countermeasures only show up more clearly on the chart.

Real Situations from Our Practice in Bulgaria

A seaside hotel: shortages at the peak of the season

The owner of a family hotel in Varna noticed regular cash shortages during the summer season. Suspicion fell on three employees, each denying involvement. A polygraph screening of the staff identified the person responsible and cleared the other two, preserving the team at the busiest time for the business.

A family divided by war: restoring trust

A woman moved to Sofia with the children while her husband stayed to work in Ukraine. A year of separation built up suspicions that threatened the marriage. During his visit the couple took an infidelity test. The result removed the doubts and allowed them to speak openly rather than accuse each other from a distance.

A shared business: a dispute between partners

Two entrepreneurs from the Ukrainian community in Bulgaria disagreed over the terms of a joint investment. Instead of a lengthy court case in a foreign jurisdiction, both agreed to an examination at a lawyer's request. Based on the polygraph results, the dispute was settled out of court — faster and cheaper than through a Bulgarian court.

A false accusation: proving innocence

A Ukrainian woman working as a hotel administrator near Burgas was suspected by colleagues of taking money from the till. There was no direct proof, but the atmosphere in the team became unbearable. To clear her name she asked for a lie detector test herself. The result confirmed her account and restored normal working relations — the polygraph worked to protect an honest person.

Confidentiality Is Our Standard

People turn to a polygraph when trust, money or reputation is at stake — and far from home the price of exposure is higher still. That is why we guarantee confidentiality at the level of the procedure, not just in words.

  • Access to results — only the client receives the report and polygrams. No information to third parties without written permission.
  • Voluntary participation — testing requires written consent. Anyone may refuse any question.
  • Your choice of format — a private room at the Sofia office or a visit to your location: no queues, no strangers around.
  • Data protection — all materials are stored in a secure system in line with personal data requirements.

Polygraph Services for Businesses in Bulgaria

Ukrainian-owned companies, international teams and the resort business in Bulgaria face dishonesty among staff as an everyday risk — especially where cash turnover is high and there are many seasonal workers. Pre-employment screening filters out high-risk candidates, internal investigations resolve acute incidents of shortages, and scheduled checks keep the team disciplined.

Most often businesses come to check staff with financial responsibility (cashiers, administrators, drivers), to trace a leak of the client base, and to assess the reliability of a future partner before a joint project. All checks for companies are carried out under contract, with the written consent of employees and with full documentation.

Group testing. Special terms apply when testing 5 or more people. Details by phone: +38 067 730 99 00.

Where We Work in Bulgaria

Our office is located in Sofia at Boulevard Totleben 53-55, 1606. Examiners also travel to cities across the country: Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, Ruse, Stara Zagora, Blagoevgrad and the resort towns of the Black Sea coast.

For an on-site session, any quiet room of 10 m² or more works: a meeting room, a private office, a hotel room or a room at home. A session in Sofia can usually be arranged within 1–2 days; for other cities, allow 2–4 days depending on the schedule.

Working hours: daily 08:00–22:00 (EET). The preliminary phone consultation is free.

How to Prepare for a Lie Detector Test

The polygraph needs no special preparation at all. What helps most is a calm, ordinary state: sleep well the night before, skip alcohol and sedatives, eat as you normally would and don't rush on your way. Just tell the examiner at the start of the interview about any medication prescribed by your doctor — that is part of the standard procedure.

Don't try to memorize answers or work yourself up on purpose: every question is shown and agreed with you beforehand, and the method is built precisely to separate ordinary nerves from a concealment response. A calm mindset and an honest pre-test talk are all you need to bring.

Who Should Postpone the Test

The test itself is safe, but a few conditions call for postponing the session: a flare-up of heart or neurological disease, pregnancy, heavy stress, or alcohol and sedatives the day before. Minors are examined only with written consent and a parent or guardian present.

The examiner clarifies any contraindications during the compulsory pre-test interview, so it matters to be honest about your well-being and medication. If you feel unwell on the day of the appointment, it is smarter to shift the session by a few days — the reliability of the result depends directly on your condition.

Legal Standing of the Results

You receive an official written report from a certified SPU examiner. It is widely used in private disputes, corporate decisions and family matters. Whether the report can be attached to court materials in a Bulgarian court depends on the jurisdiction and the type of proceedings — discuss your specific case with your lawyer, and we will prepare the examination in the required format.
